Children's Book Author Barbara Kerley
"Told in a leisurely pace in simple, gently cadenced language, these personal reminiscences display a lively sense of humor and a deep appreciation and respect for nature.... Kerley tells excellent, almost intimate, stories.... Wide margins, heavy cream paper, and handsome black-and-white woodblock prints...make the book a joy to hold."

Teacher's Guide for Songs of Papa's Island
1. Ask students to imagine SCUBA diving for the first time. What do they feel? See? Invite them to draw a picture of what they discover when they peek into an underwater cave.
2. Discuss what Papa might say about the Blob Frog at book's end.
3. Invite students to rewrite one chapter of the book from Papa's perspective.
4. Have students imagine being able to walk like a gecko, across the ceiling. Invite them to draw a picture of what the classroom or other room in the school would look like to a gecko, looking down.
